Purpose of Moro Reflex
Primitive Fight or Flight Reaction
Purpose of Rooting Reflex
Automatic Response to turn towards food
Purpose of Palmar Reflex
Automatic flexing of fingers to grab
Purpose of ATNR Reflex
To assist baby through birth canal and develop cross pattern movements
Purpose of Spinal Gallant Reflex
Assist baby with birth process
Purpose of TLR Reflex
Basis for head management and postural stability sing major muscle groups
Purpose of Landau Reflex
Assist with Posture Development
Purpose of STNR Reflex
Preparation for crawling
Rooting

What happens if Moro reflex not integrated: Functional Implications
Motion sickness, poor balance/coordination, delayed equilibrium & righting responses, auditory hypersensitivity, poor auditory discrimination, difficulty with transitions, hypersensitivity may be seen in only one sense
What happens if Moro reflex not integrated: Global Manifestations
Dislike change or surprise, Allergies, lowered immunity, ear infection, parents walk on eggshells to keep the world right for their kids, need to control, poor stamina, low self-esteem, difficulty making decisions, “glued” to mom or teacher, sedentary.
What happens if ATNR reflex not integrated
- Delayed eye-hand skills
- Poor midline development
- Difficulty crossing midline with hands and eyes
- Difficulty with auditory processing
- Poor organization
- When reaching, one arm extends, other retracts
- One leg left behind during crawling
- Turning body while drawing/writing
- Not spontaneously using non-dominant hand to assist
What happens if Spinal Gallant not integrated: Underdeveloped
- Contributes to hyper-tonicity
- Strong ATNR and STNR
- Impeded cross patterns for crawling and creeping
What happens if Spinal Gallant not integrated
- Fidgeting
- Bed Wetting
- Poor concentration and short term memory
- Hip rotation to one side when walking
- Child may only wear sweatpants (worn low) to avoid stimulation of lumbar region.
What reflex tends to cause a child to walk on toes when it is not integrated?
TLR
What happens if flexor TLR not integrated?
- Slouched posture
- Low muscle tone
- Dislike of physical activity
- Stuck in flexion
What happens if extensor TLR not integrated?
- Toe walking
- High muscle tone
- Dislike of physical activity
- Stuck in extension
- Poor organizational skills
- Motion sickness
Does TLR flexion or TLR extension cause motion sickness when reflex is not integrated?
TLR Extension
If Moro reflex is not integrated, __________ probably wont be either
TLR
What reflex helps to inhibit the TLR reflex?
Landau
What two reflexes help the baby through the birthing process?
ATNR & Spinal Gallant
What happens if Landau reflex is not integrated?
- Poor muscle tone causing chronic back and neck pain
- Tension and hyperextension of the legs accompanied by stiffness of the lower body
- Affects development of balance
- Ability to flex leg muscles correctly
- Vertical eye tracking
- A limitation of the field of vision
- Poor at sports
- Stiff awkward movements in lower half of body
- Difficulty in hopping, jumping
The “W” sitting position is a sign that what reflex is not integrated?
STNR
With what motion is the STNR integrated?
Integrated when child begins to crawl and when rocking backing forth on hands and knees
What happens if STNR not integrated?
- W” sitting (this position inhibits STNR)
- Poor posture
- Hands in pocket
- Bunny hop instead of crawl
- Difficulty sitting still
- Falls out of chair
- Clumsy
- Poor balance
- Not into sports because can’t rely on body
- Behavior problems
- Poor eye hand coordination
- Difficulty copying
- Difficulty sitting for fine motor activities
What is the purpose of the moro reflex?
purpose is to aide in the development of fight or flight response. Should be replaced by the adult “startle” response within 4 months of age
What is the purpose of the ATNR?
Precursor for hand/eye coordination
What is the purpose of the Spinal Gallant?
Helps with the birthing process
What is the purpose of the TLR?
Basis for head management
What is the purpose of the Landau
Posture development
What is the purpose of the STNR?
“crawling reflex”
