Primary Volcanic Hazards Flashcards
What is a lava flow?
A mass of flowing lava which crushes and burns everything in its path
What do lava flows sometimes do?
Melt ice and snow to cause flooding
What are lava flows expelled through?
Fractures and cracks in the earths crust
What are volcanic gases?
Gases which are released into the atmosphere during an eruption
What are some types of volcanic gases?
Co2
Carbon monoxide
Sulfur oxide
Hydrogen sulfide
What do pyroclastic flows contain?
A high density mix of hot lava blocks, ash and gas
What are the 3 ways in which pyroclastic flows can form?
- Collapse of eruption column
- Boiling over from eruptive vents
- Collapse of lava domes
What are the 2 parts which pyroclastic flows consist of?
- Lower flow of fragments
2. Turbulent cloud of ash
What is tephra?
Fragments of rock which are produced when magma is explosively ejected
