Primary Survey Flashcards
What is the acronym you follow when doing a primary survey?
DRsABC
First step?
Danger- look around the casualty for anything that might be a danger to you
Second step?
Response- Check your casualty’s level of response (ask a question, give a command, tap on the shoulder nearest you)
When approaching a casualty, which direction should you walk in?
ALWAYS approach in their line of sight from their feet towards their head
Third step?
Shout for help (if you are alone)
Fourth step?
Airways- check to see if the patient has a block airway and adjust their head position to allow their airways to stay open
How do you adjust someone’s airway?
Placing a hand on the forehead. Tip the head back gently, the mouth will fall open and you can look for any obvious objects that might be blocking the airway. Then place two fingers on the bony bit of the chin and tip the head back further. Hold your fingers in place to stop the head from falling back forward.
Fifth step?
Breathing- check to see if the casualty’s breathing is steady and their rate is normal (2 or 3 breaths taken in 10 seconds)
How to check for breathing if a casualty was on their BACK?
Place your cheek down near the casualties mouth and nose, look down at their chest and watch it rise and fall. Check breathing for 10 seconds.
How to check for breathing if a casualty was on their front?
Place one hand in front of their mouth and nose, and the other on their back. Feel their breaths against your hand/ feel their chest rise and fall to observe breathing rate
Final step?
Circulation- check to see if there are large amounts of blood near the casualty
