primary, secondary, quantitative, qualitative methods Flashcards
What is primary data?
information collected by sociologists themselves for their own purposes
What is an example of primary methods?
- social surveys
- participant observation
- experiments
What is an advantage of using primary data?
can gather precise information
What is a disadvantage of using primary data?
can be costly and time consuming
What is secondary data?
information that has been collected by someone used by other sociologists for their own purposes
What is an example of secondary methods?
- official statistics
- documents
What is an advantage of using secondary data?
quick and easy as data has already been produced
What is a disadvantage of using secondary data?
may not provide the exact information that the sociologist needs
What is quantitative data?
refers to information in a numerical form
What are examples of quantitative data?
official statistics - for example, how many girls passed five GCSE’s or more (structured interviews, questionnaires)
What is qualitative data?
