Primary Growth Flashcards
Define primary growth of root
Elongation of root due to the activity of primary meristems located on root Alex is called the primary growth if root.
What are the three processes that take place during the growth
Cell division
Cell elongation
Cell differentiation
What are included in the zone of cell division in roots
Root apical meristems
And its derivatives(root cap)
In the zone of cell division in which direction are the new cells produced to and what happens to the new cells
Both inwards and outwards
Cell produced outwards- differentiated to form root cap
Cell produced inwards -undergo elongation in the zone of cell elongation
What is the function of root cap
Prevents damaging the root aoicam meristem from friction when it grows through soil.
What happens in the zone of cell maturation
Cells begin specialising in structure and function where cells complete their differentiation and become functionally mature
Define primary growth of the shoot
Elongation of shoot due to the activity of primary meristems located in the shoot apex
Define the shoot apical meristem
The shoot apical meristem is a dome shaped mass of dividing cells located at the shoot tip
What are leaf primordia
The finger like projection that leaves develop along the sides of the apical meristem
What is the function of leaf primordia
Cover the short apical meristem
In which direction does the shoot apical meristem produce new cells
Only towards the stem
What are the differences between shoot apex and root apex
Shoot- tip of shoot
Root apex- tip of root
Shoot -protected by leaf primordia
Root -protected by root cap
Shoot- produce new cells only inwards
Root- produce new cells both outward and inward
