What does “ABC” stand for?
Airway(s), Breathing, Circulation
What is the second step of the Primary Assessment?
AWAKE: “The Levels of Consciousness” (ConAlert, ConConf, UnconRes, UnconUnres)
What are the Levels of Consciousness regarding conscious victims?
Conscious Alert: victim is aware/oriented of time, place, and/or person/self
Conscious Confused: victim is awake but struggling with simple questions and/or conversations
What are the Levels of Consciousness regarding unconscious victims?
Unconscious Responsive: reacts to voice and/or pain/touch
Unconscious Unresponsive: does not react to any external stimuli, such as touch, voice/noises, or pain
What is the third step of a Primary Assessment?
OPEN: “Maintaining an open airway”
What is the fourth step of a Primary Assessment?
BREATHE: “Assess quality of breathing” (gasping or agonal)
What is the fifth (and final) step of a Primary Assessment?
BLEED: “Check for signs of significant bleeding”
