Why do we need to take medical/event history?
A
To determine:
- what happened;
- where the victim is injured;
- and whether or not the victim’s medical history needs to be considered (i.e. heart conditions, illnesses, diseases, etc.)

What are the very first questions you should ask when taking a history?
A
“Does it hurt anywhere? Where?” and then; “Can you describe it for me? Have you felt this pain before?”

What else should you ask?
A
- “What were you doing?” / “What happened?” / “Do you know how you got hurt?”
- Are you on any medication?” / “Did you take a medication today?”
- “Do you have any allergies?”
- “When was the last time you ate?” / “Have you eaten today? What did you eat?”

Should you keep track of and/or (get a bystander to) write down the answers? Why?
A
Yes! It’s important that this information gets to the EMS team or whoever responds to the call for help (i.e. Fire Rescue Ambulances, Mobile Health Units, etc.).
