What is Primary Assessment?
What are the yes or no questions?

A

Used to determine is life-threatening conditions exists.
It asks “yes” or “no” questions.
1. LOC - Is the victim responsive and conscious?
2. Airway - Is the airway open?
3. Breathing - Is the victim breathing normally?
4. Circulation - Is the blood circulating sufficiently throughout the body?

Primary Assessment - If the answer is “yes”?

A

The primary assessment goes virtually unnoticed. The victim is responsive and can speak freely and coherently. Proceed to secondary assessment

Primary Assessment - If the answer is “no”?

A

When there is no response, ineffective breathing, and no signs of circulation or major bleeding, the Primary Assessment flows seamlessly into treatment of these emergencies. Phone EMS immediately

Primary Assessment Decision Flow Chart

A

If hazards present, remove hazard; if hazard unremovable, contact EMS.
Check Mechanism of Injury, if no spinal check LOC; if there is spinal adjust procedures to prevent movement, then check LOC
After, check for responsiveness. If not responsive, contact EMS, open airway and breathing check. If not breathing, start CPR.
If responsive, check for breathing or circulatory distress. If distressed, treat (WARTS). If not distressed and breathing, check for major bleeding. Treat for shock ad then move on to Secondary Assessment
