Preventing Diseases Flashcards
Why is it important that a scab forms?
So that no microbes can get into the cut.
What is a scab?
A scab is a clot of blood which dries.
Give two ways the body stops microbes from entering.
By forming scabs and a line of defence which is the skin
Cystic fibrosis suffers produce a thick mucus in the lungs. Why are they more likely to get lung infection?
The mucus would stay in the lungs if it was too thick.
What is the difference between antibodies and antitoxins?
Antibodies are the chemicals that attach to the microbes and destroy them. Antitoxins neutralise poisons.
Give strengths and weaknesses of these diagrams in how they show the white blood cells at work.
Strengths- the diagram shows how the microbes enter the body and the White blood cells fighting the microbes.
Weaknesses-it doesn’t show the different White blood cells.
Explain why the first time you get a disease, it is far worse than the second time.
Because you immune system recognises the change in the microbes so it can relate to the first disease.
