Preventative medicine I Flashcards
What is primary prevention?
Preventing the onset of the disease
- behaviour
- environment
What is secondary prevention?
Halt progression once started
- early diagnosis
- screening NB healthy people thus different
What is tertiary prevention?
Limit disability and complications in established disease
- Rehabilitation
Who championed the population approach to prevention as opposed to the ‘high risk’ approach?
Geoffrey Rose - Single Population Theory
What is the difference between the population approach and high risk approach?
High risk:
- identify and treat the “top end” of the population distribution (i.e. the sick)
Population approach:
- shift the mean of the entire distribution to the left
What is social capital?
Networks together with shared norms, values and understandings that facilitate co-operation within or among groups
A large number of people at small risk may give rise to…?
More cases of disease than a small number of people at high risk
The population mean predicts…
The prevalence of cases (e.g. gambling, alcohol, education)
Are causes of population incidence and individual cases the same?
No
According to Geoffrey Rose, what are the determinants of disease?
Mainly economic and social
