When do you use the preterite?
The preterite is used for actions that can be viewed as single events, actions that were repeated a specific number of times, or occurred during a specific period of time, actions that were part of a chain of events, to state the beginning or the end of an action, actions that are completed, and for past any actions that are seen as completed.
How do you change -car, -gar, and -zar verbs?
You change the yo form
Sacar- saqué
Pagar- pagué
Empezar- empecé

You have to change the i to y in the third person
Leer- leyó and leyeron accents in all but ellos
