Pressure Systems Flashcards
High pressure
Rotation
Anticyclone, warming up of the air by compression
Clockwise in northern hemisphere
Ridge, wedge, line of high pressure
Low pressure 1
Rotation
Anti clockwise and inward movement
Convergence, rising air, adiabatic cooling
Trough line, line of low pressure
Isobaric through, extends to other pressure system
Low pressure 2
Orographic low, due to terrain, leeward side
Polar depression, water doesn’t cool as fast as air
Cold air over warm sea typically
Thermal depression: intense heating of ground surface, rising air, low pressure system forms
Warm high
Surface high pressure with warm air at the middle, bubble upward
–> true alt increase
Cold high
Surface high pressure with cold air at middle
Blocking high or anticyclone
Powerful high pressure blocking weather
Temporary cold anticyclone
Super cold high pressure system blocking the progress of the incoming warm air.
Flat pressure gradient system
Isobars are widespread
Low wind conditions
Winter: Low clouds, fog, poor visibility
Summer: heat TS
