Pressure Flashcards
what is pressure?
the force acting per unit area
how can we calculate pressure?
p (pressure in Pa or N/m^2)= F (force in N)/ A (area of contact surface in m^2)
what is the relationship between depth and liquid pressure?
the greater the depth of liquid, the greater the liquid pressure, due to larger amount of liquid above
what is the relationship between density and liquid pressure?
the greater the density, the greater the liquid pressure (e.g. water pressure is higher than oil pressure because water is denser than oil)
how do we calculate liquid pressure?
p (liquid pressure in Pa or N/m^2) = h (depth of point beneath liquid surface) x p (density of liquid in kg/m^3) x g (gravitational field strength in N/kg or acceleration due to gravity in m/s^2)
