Andrew Johnson, briefly continued Lincoln’s policies, however in May 1865 announced his own plans for Reconstruction.
What did A.Johnsons plan for reconstruction include
It included a vow of loyalty to the nation and the abolition of slavery that southern states were required to take before they could be readmitted to the nation
Why was Johnson unsuccessful in achieving civil rights for African Americans
Allowed the creation of black codes in midwestern states which regulated/inhibited migration of AA to the Midwest. Black codes in the south were adopted after the civil war to re-impose the old social structure. These laws restricted the civil rights of emancipated slaves, Mississippi was the first state to institute laws abolishing full civil rights
What was the Freedmen’s Bureau and when was it passed
Provide relief and assistance to former slaves, including health services, educational services, and abandoned land services. March 3rd 1865
What action did A.Johnson take against the Freedmen’s Bureau
Tried presidential veto against the act, resulting in a clash with congress
