Presentations Flashcards
SLPs should have knowledge of (swallowing)
Anatomy and physiology of swallowing
Etiologies of swallowing issues
Screening/TX of dysphagia
Patient interaction/education
Standard swallowing screening tool (SSST)
Must have patient swallow as part of screener
Must be valid, reliable, and feesible
Must be sensitive and specific
Early detection of dysphagia/aspiration
Water swallow tests
Standard bedside swallow assessment
Pulse oximetry
TX examples
Transference Tongue strengthening Gargling Mendelsonn maneuver Chin tuck Diet modification
Transcranial direct current stimulation
Small electrodes on scalp
Improves motor dysfunction in stroke patients (acute ischemic strokes)
Effects on improving dysphagia not investigated
ALS
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Progressive motor neuron disease
Motor neurons die
Often starts with tongue dysfunction
Progression of ALS is better with ..
Lower BMI and better nutrition
Impaired velophagryngeal closure can cause
(Nasal air emission and hypernasality)
Can cause oral/pharyngeal swallow deficits
Why do we need to test ALS patients for dysphagia
Because it is common that dysphagia and dysarthria will co occur
