What are some barriers to pregnant women seeking treatment
Fear of losing their child
Fear of judgement for putting their child at risk
What are some barriers for nurses seeking treatment
Treatment being offered under their employer thus potentiating discovery / shame

SUDs in older populations manifest differently and there are few tools with which to diagnose them
Risk factors for SUD in children and adolescents
Higher risk of mood and psychotic disorders
Potential for increased risk due to danger of usage to be done by people fearful of seeking help should it go wrong
More susceptible to addiction later on
What are some complications of SUD in an older adult?
Death usually. Reduced liver function / degradation of enzymes can cause reduced tolerance
Describe SUD assessment in an older adult.
Often do not receive timely diagnosis of substance use disorders
Important for nurses to not ignore symptoms (delirium, memory loss, falling etc)
Symptoms are not normal simply due to age
Nurses and prevalence of SuDs

High stress job
Burnout
Will return to work via a graduated return
What is motivational interviewing? Describe components of MI.
MI is a collaborative, goal-oriented style of communication with particular attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion
What are some barriers to women seeking SUD treatment?
Child care
High stigma for women as they are seen as societies caretakers
Price (Isn’t this a barrier for everyone?)
Transportation
Stigma
What are some medical complications for women who abuse alcohol and drugs?
Women have faster onset of comorbid medical conditions
Decreased amount of alcohol dehyodregenase
Higher concentration of alcohol acetylaldehyde
Cardiovascular damage
Brain damage
Evidence based treatment for concurrent disorders
Integrated approach. Treat both substance use AND mental disorder
Trans-theoretical model of change
pre-contemplation - Patient does not see their use as a problem
contemplation - Patient sees their use as a problem, but does not know what to do about it
preparation - Patient has a plan of action on stopping their usage
action - Patient is implementing that plan to stop usage
maintenance - Patient is maintaining their non-usage
Lapse - Patient is craving substance
Relapse - Patient has used substance again
