Presentation Flashcards
Traumatic Arthritis
Follows traumatic injury to knee
Hemartrosis
Traumatic blow to the knee
Monoarticular Steroid-Sensitive Arthritis
Insidious onset in a single joint
Crystal Synovitis
Inflammation,
Pain,
Swelling,
Lumps
Septic Arthritis
Knee pain with active and passive movement,
Swelling
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Capsular pattern, Pain, Swelling, Warmth, Stiffness
Early Arthrosis
Insidious onset in a single joint
Discoid Meniscus Injury
In absence of traumatic cause: visible or audible palpable snap on terminal extension (10-20’) along with pain, swelling, and locking; can also be an “annoying click” during movement
Bucket-Handle Meniscal Lesion
Clicking or locking along with pain in the joint line
Posterior Lesion
Non-capsular pattern, slight twinges,
Symptoms of internal derangement at the back of the knee,
Slight limitation of flexion
Loose bodies in Adolescents
Twinges, usually on walking downstairs; non-capsular pattern; typical end-feel; “sprain without a sprain”
Loose Bodies Complicating Arthrosis
Non-capsular pattern, twinges, moving pain, “sprain without a sprain”
Medial Coronary Ligament
Medial knee pain
Medial Colateral Ligament (MCL)
Medial knee pain
Intra-articular Adhesions
Non-capsular pattern,
Limited in knee flexion (extension unimpaired),
Clicking
Advanced Arthrosis
Insidious onset in a single joint
Subsynovial Hematoma
Anterior knee pain
Medial Colateral Bursitis
Medial knee pain
Medial Meniscus
Medial knee pain
Patellar Bursitis
Anterior knee pain
Popliteal (Baker’s) Cyst
Posterior knee pain,
Swelling in popliteal space,
Stiffness,
Knee pain
Adherent Vastus Intermedius
limited knee flexion, normal extension following femur fracture
Chronic Non-adherent Ligamentous Lesion (Plica Mediopatellaris)
Medial knee pain
Loose Body
Medial knee pain
Plica Synovialis Syndrome
Pain, Popping, Effusion, Swelling, Loss of ROM
Posterior Capsular Strain
Full ROM and RROM,
Pain near/on oblique popliteal ligament,
tenderness between medial and lateral condyles
Iliotibial Tract Bursitis
Lateral hip pain,
Difficult sleeping on side
Patellar Bursitis
Anterior knee pain
Patellofemoral Pain Disorders
Anterior knee pain
Patellofemoral Arthrosis
Anterior knee pain
Sprain of Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)-
Anterior Insertion
Anterior knee pain
Sprain of Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL)-
Anterior Insertion
Anterior knee pain
Suprapatellar Tendinitis
Anterior knee pain
Infrapatellar Tendinitis
Anterior knee pain
Infrapatellar Tenosynovitis
Anterior knee pain
Quadriceps Expansion Tendinitis
Anterior knee pain
Lesions at Tibial Tuberosity
Anterior knee pain, tenderness, Pain with jumping/running, Firm mass (Osgood-Schlatter's), Pain with resisted knee flexion
Medial Quadriceps Expansion Tendinitis
Medial knee pain
Pes Anerinus Tendinitis
Medial knee pain
Lateral coronary Ligament
Often mistaken for meniscal lesion,
Pain w/ twisting movement,
Joint line tenderness, Limited ROM
Lateral Colateral Ligament (LCL) Injury
Swelling,
Pain and stiffness located lateral to knee,
Widening of knee joint laterally
Lateral Meniscus Tear
Lateral knee pain (joint line), Stiffness, Swelling, Catching/locking, Decreased ROM, Knee "Gives-way"
Lateral Meniscus Cyst
Discomfort in lateral joint line,
Pain while standing,
Bump on lateral aspect of knee
Quadriceps Lesion
Swelling, Knee pain, Loss of function, Dent/gap just proximal to patella, Hematoma
Strained IT Band
Pain over lateral condyle of femur radiating up to hip or down to tibia
Quadriceps Rupture
Anterior leg pain
Most common in middle aged runner or jumper
Patellar Fracture
Swelling, significant knee pain
Patellar Tendon Rupture
Proximally displaced patella,
Incomplete extension, Indention of inferior patella
L3 Nerve Root Lesion
Diminished or absent patellar reflex,
Weak hip flexors and knee extensors,
Impaired distal anterior thigh sensation
Femoral Nerve Lesion
Instability/buckling of knee while climbing stairs,
Medial leg numbness,
Possible paresthesia of thigh,
Pain near inguinal ligament
Hamstrings Lesion
Posteromedial knee pain
Biceps Femoris Tendinitis
Posterolateral knee pain
Lesion of Upper Tibiofibular Joint
Painful resisted flexion, disappearing with knee in extension
Lesions of Pes Anserinus
Pain/tenderness in the inner knee,
Pain when climbing stairs, rising from a chair, at night,
Local swelling
Strained Popliteus Muscle
Posterior knee pain
Gastrocnemius Lesions
Medial head pain most often,
Audible pop with swelling and ecchymosis following significant lesion
S1 Nerve Root Lesion
Gastrocnemius weakness,
Numbness on lateral dorsum of foot
S2 Nerve Root Lesion
Bladder involvement,
Numbness over popliteal fossa,
Weakness in resisted knee flexion
Rotary Instability
Standing posture can include genu varum or hyperextension,
Possible neurological symptoms (30% of cases)
Apophysitis
Anterior knee pain
Recurrent Dislocation
