Preperation Of Salts Flashcards
Which 3 sulphate a are insoluble?
Barium, lead, calcium
Which 2 chloride, bromide and iodises are insoluble?
Silver, lead
Which group has all soluble salts?
Group 1
Which 2 groups react with water and are soluble?
1 and 2
Most metal oxides and carbonates are insoluble which group is soluble?
Group 1
Which salt forms limewater an is slightly soluble?
Calcium hydroxide
What is a salt?
Compound formed when the hydrogen ion of an acid is replaced by a metal ion or the ammonium ion
Acid + metal=?
Salt + hydrogen
Acid + insoluble base=?
Salt + water
Acid + alkali ( soluble base)=?
Salt + water
Acid + carbonate=?
Salt + carbon dioxide + water
What is the method if you add MAZIT or insoluble carbonate?
Add to excess (no more bubbles)
Filter, heat filtrate until crystallisation starts.
Allow rest of crystals to appear at room temp.
Wash with cold water and dry in filter paper.
Method if you add insoluble base?
Warm acid, add base to excess (no more solid dissolves).
Filter, treat filtrate same as MAZIT question.
Method if you add alkali?
Titration- use pipette to get set volume of alkali into conical.
Add indicator, add acid from a burette, record volumes.
Repeat without indicator.
Method for insoluble salts?
Add nitric acid to sodium.
Filter out the residue.
Wash the residue with distiller water.
Dry in drying oven or filter paper.
