Preparing Employment Communications Ch. 7 Flashcards
Explain how to decide whether your education or your experience should be first in a resume.
The more impressive of the two should be first.
Explain the main purposes of the beginning, middle, and closing paragraphs in an employment cover letter.
Opening: explain the purpose of your communication.
Middle:explain how your education, experience, and attributes qualify you for employment with the company.
Last: ask for an interview
In what sequence should your job history be arranged?
List experience entries in reverse-chronological order–last job first.
Should your resume be limited to one page? Why or why not?
Keep it to one page. However, if you have good info that warrants two pages use two.
Explain the main differences between chronological and functional resumes.
Chronological format is the most common. The content is listed in easy-to-follow time-based order, and most employers are familiar with this format.
The functional-resume format emphasizes their career path. People who wish to make a career shift, de-emphasize age or no impressive career path use this method.
List three guidelines to remember when being interviewed for a job.
- Do your homework
- Be prepared and be on time
- Be sensitive to appearance and body language
- Speak confidently, clearly, and fluently
- Be honest; don’t pretend to be something you’re not
- Tie your answers to the job requirements
- Give compelling answers
- Have two questions to ask the interviewer
- Be prepared to answer any surprise questions
Explain how to prepare for a telephone interview.
Same as a regular interview, but remember to speak clearly, answer every question fully, smile, and let your warmth come through your voice, and be respectful. Have everything you need out in front of you. Have a glass of water incase mouth gets dry.
What is a PAR story? Why are PAR stories so important in interviews?
PAR-problem, action, result stories.
They help a negative question work for you instead of against you.
What types of questions are illegal to ask in a job interview?
Age, race, gender, marital status, religious preference, as any other factor that has no relevance to success on the job.
Describe the difference between closed and open questions.
Closed questions can be answered with a yes or no or with a short answer.
Open questions require more explanation, and they often inquire about feelings, opinions, and values.
What is a behavioral question?
Behavioral question is an open ended question that asks the respondent how he or she acted in a specific situation.
Describe several responding techniques to demonstrate you are listening to a person you are interviewing.
Maintain good eye contact.
Smile and nod head
Say “uh-huh” reflecting interest and attentive listening.
Paraphrase the speakers response.
Describe how HATS can be applied to employment resumes.
A resume is a self-promotion document to help you obtain a job interview with a prospective employer. If you use HATS the more appealing it will look. You will promote yourself very well with headings, art, topography, and spacing.
Should the OABC format be used in composing thank you letters? Why or why not?
No, because they should be short and concise. You are only giving a sincere thanks, something about the interview that you appreciated, found interesting or particularly enjoyed and a statement or two reaffirming your interest in working for the organization.
