What words are represented by the acronym HATS (design aspects)?

What does the five second standard refer to?
Someone should be able to look at your writing/slide and get its main message
What is a legend? a call out? a braced heading?
Legend: an explanatory list of symbols or colors used in a chart. Call out: explanatory text placed beside a graphic with a line going from the explanatory text to the part of the graphic it is explaining. Braced heading: a heading that applies to more than one column. Other headings: topic, statement, questions.
Compare the similarities and differences of bar charts and line charts. Why are line and bar charts generally preferred over pie charts?
Bar graphs: quantity by length of bard, xy axis, Line graphs: quantity by vertical placement of lines, xy axis. Line and bar graphs are preferred over pie charts because it is hard for the human eye to distinguish between two areas of similar size.
Describe the differences between vector and raster graphics
Vector: clip art, they do not get blurry as you make them bigger, not pixelated, Raster: Photos, pixels, can get blurry as their size increases.
Describe the difference between serif and san serif fonts. Which of these styles is used most often for body text?
Serif: little hooks at the end of strokes, use with body of text. San serif: no little hooks at the end of strokes, use with headings.
In Photographs, what is the rule of thirds?
Tic Tac Toe on a picture. place subject on intersecting lines.
Explain two guidelines for photographic people outdoors on sunny days
light should be on the front of the object (cuz if it’s not, you won’t see the subject), use a camera flash.
how many typographic “points” are in an inch? What is the ideal type size for most audiences?
72 points=1 inch, 10-12 point type is ideal for most audiences (unless they’re old, then you should make the size bigger)
What type of text alignment should be used with most office documents?
Left
What is a gray page? Why is undesirable?
all text, no white space. looks uninviting, intimidating, boring, unappealing.
What are widows and orphans? why should they be avoided?
Widows: last line of a paragraph left at the top of a page, orphan first line of a paragraph left at the bottom of the page.
What is white space? What are the two main functions of white space?
white space=blank space, two main functions: divides and frames, gives visual relief, enhances reader friendliness.
