List and describe the four basic management functions.
POML: Plan, Organize, Monitor, Lead
A. Planning: Listen and remain aware; involve employees appropriately, especially when the decision affects them, when they have useful knowledge to contribute, or for their level
B. Organizing: ID roles and respect for each position and make sure they are clearly communicated. Delegate, Explain the detail, trust employees
C. Monotoring: ID and Communicate all evaluation factors and measurements. Document and monitor performance, resolve performance violations in a timely manner
D. Leading: Clarify the vision and work to achieve employee buy-in. Listen to peeps, be honest, build trust. Create environment for growth, recognition and reinforcement
Describe the American with disabilities act.
Provides legislation to help anyone who has “a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.” Prohibits discrimination in recruit, hire, promotion, training, pay, etc.
Why must you be careful when using hand gestures in different cultures?
Many gestures used in the U.S. are obscene and taboo in other cultures.
List three guidelines for writing to people for whom English is a second language.
a. avoid slang, puns, abbreviations, b. use active voice, c. simple concrete words, d. use words consistently, e. simple sentences, f. careful with question marks and different punctuation marks, g. keep paragraphs short
Explain differences between successful and unsuccessful teams.
a. successful team: all participate, opposing ideas are encouraged and welcomed, participants show respect/listen, people are open, honest, and trustful, avoid gossiping, and unanimous decisions or understanding.
b. unsuccessful teams: loudest members get speaking time, opposing ideas are unwanted conflict, disrespect and interruption, gossip, people are distrustful/closed, and a few members make the decision
What are the three main ways to write collaboratively?
a. entire group sits together and composes the text, b. one person does all the writing and everyone critiques, c. assign different parts, later put together
what is a gantt chart and how is it used?
a. a horizontal bar chart projected completions time and actual completed times. b. set dates, track completion times, c. projects on a vertical list
How is a PERT chart different from a gantt chart?

Why is trust so important in organizations?
without trust, organizations would cease to exist. Organizations are based on relationships
What is networking and why is it important?
a. networking is building relationships with other people, b. people can be called on for info or help or influence, c. you’ll get a job through the people you know, d. give as well as receive.
