When does it begin?
when patient is scheduled for sugery and ends at the time of transfer to the surgical suite
Identify?
Hospital # Identification band. Do not use Room # or bed number
Complications
Cardiac,Pulmonary,smokers,Allergies
Lab values prior to sugery
provides baseline, helps predicts potential complications
Autologous blood donation
Can be given up to 5 weeks before the scheduled surgery.
Education
should be documented, who was involved, what was taught, material given.
If patient cannot explain surgery and does not understand
Notify provider.
Preoperative drugs
Reduce anxiety,relaxation, nasal and oral secretions, prevent laryngospasm, reduce vagal-induced bradycardia, inhibit gastric secretions.
Urinary catheter inserted
prevents injury to bladder, measures accurate output.
Proper postitioning
patency of tubes, drains, and vascular access devices.
Mobility soon after
stimulates intestional motility, enhances lung expansion, mobilizes secretions, promotes venous return, prevents joint rigidity, relieves pressure.
