Postoperative Flashcards
when does it start?
completion of surgery and transfer of the patient to either the postanesthesia care unit, same day unit or ICU.
purpose of postanesthesia
ongoing evaluation, stabilization of patients to anticipate prevent and treat complications
If in critical condition
transfer directly from OR to ICU
Most important assessment
Respiratory
PACU
keep suction equipment, oxygen, and artificial breathing equipment
Peripheral vascular assessment
Performed because anesthesia and positioning during surgery may impair the peripheral circulation
general anesthesia check
cerebral functioning and LOC, awareness. Motor and sensory function, fluid volume deficit
Fluid and electrolyte balance
Fasting and loss of fluid and blood effects it
Nausea and Vomiting
most common reaction after surgery
Hypothermia
causes shivering that increases oxygen demand and induces hypoxemia. Highest incidence of this occurs on the 2nd day.
Assess the incision sight
in the PACU and each shift on the med-surg unit
Clean surgical wound heals at skin level
In 2 weeks in the absence of trauma. Complete healing may take 6 months to 2 years.
First dressing change(aseptic technique)
surgeon
Priority nursing diagnosis
impaired gas exchange, impaired skin integrity, acute pain, potential for hypoxemia.
If dehiscence or evisceration occurs
apply sterile non adherent or saline dressing, have patient lie flat with knees bent to reduce intra-abdominal pressure, notify surgeron.
