Why is prenatal care so important?
Along with good nutrition, adequate prenatal healthcare is associated with the delivery of healthy babies
What does good prenatal care include?
- A full medical examination
-Advice about the value of exercise and good nutrition
-The need to avoid the use of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs
-Reduction in vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles, diphtheria, and type b meningitis have lowered infant mortality rates
What are some illegal drugs that affect pregnancies?
-Amphetamines- can cause spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, or prematurity
-Cocaine: physical & psychological effects
-Marijuana: congenital anomalies
-Narcotics: Behavioral disturbances, babies are smaller than normal, have drug withdrawal symptoms ie, low appetite, sleep patterns are disturbed
What are some legal drugs that can cause issues in pregnancy?
Alcohol- Can cause fetal alcohol syndrome(FAS) and less severe fetal syndrome (FAE)
Caffeine- in tea and soft drinks can retard prenatal growth, produce a slightly increased risk of miscarriage

Tranquilizers and sleeping pills
Effects of over-the-counter drugs
- Analgesics, cough medicines, laxatives, and allergy pills are unsafe
-Aspirin in large doses can cause excessive bleeding and other problems
-Cough syrups, and antacids can be unsafe
-Vitamins are risky if taken in excess
