Music

Rhythm
Having to do with the time relationships in music, the most basic of the elements; the arrangement of time in music Beat Rhythmic notation
Tempo
Rate of speed, the specific duration of a half note depends on the tempo Fast, medium, slow
Meter
Organizes rhythm unto units called measures, each containing a particular number of pulses, or beats Common meters: duple, triple, quadruple

Melody
A meaningful succession of tones of various levels of pitch
Octave
Most basic interval, the 2 tones of which share the same letter name and sound nearly alike
Scales
Stepwise rising and descending patterns of pitches within the range of an octave
Tune
If a melody, such as a children’s song or folk song, is particularly singable and memorable and seems complete in itself
Harmony
The sounding of 2 or more different tones at once in a logical or meaningful manner Chords Key Texture
Tonality/tonal system
The system of harmony that has governed Western music for nearly 400 years
Chords
Purposeful combinations of 3 or more different tones constitute
Tonic
First tone of a major or minor scale, represents a kind of home base, names the key of a composition
Triad
Most basic chord in the tonal system consisting of 3 alternate tones
Timbre
Quality of a musical sound depends on characteristics of the medium producing it, pitch also effects timbre Sound “colors” Pitch Dynamics
Dynamic level
Affecting the timbre of a voice or instrument is the loudness or softness of the sound
Genre
Kind or category of music to which it belongs, such as orchestral, choral, or folk
Form
The manner in which it is organized
