Q

Signs, symptoms and management of epileptic seizures.

A

Caused by a high rate of electrical activity being discharged from the brain. Two types: Petit mals and grand mals. Petit mals cause a vacant expression on casualty, they are unresponsive and appear to be vacant. Grand mals cause the body to be rigid, sometimes unconscious, froth from mouth, tightened jaw, loss of bladder control.
DRSABCD. For petit mal lay in lateral recovery position, reassure them, make sure they are breathing regularly and that there is no obstruction to airway. For grand mal, DRSABCD, remove any dangerous objects from area, clear the scene (stop the casualty from being embarrassed when they wake).

Q

Signs, symptoms and management of anaphylaxis.

A

Condition where severe allergic reaction occurs when a person who is susceptible is exposed to the allergen. Tightness in throat, difficulty breathing, swelling in face and/or throat, loss of consciousness, vomiting, abdominal pain. Get rid of the allergen. DRSABCD, implement their anaphylaxis plan, e.g. EpiPen. Blue to the sky, orange to the thigh.

Q

Signs, symptoms and management of poisons.

A

Substance that is harmful to the body. Headaches, abdominal pain, vomiting, breathing difficulty, drowsiness, change in skin colour, breathe smells like fumes or other odours. DRSABCD, if conscious determine type of poison taken. If it is not corrosive then induce vomiting, but if it is corrosive do not induce vomiting as this can burn the oesophagus. If it is corrosive give water or milk. If it medicinal induce vomiting.

Q

Signs, symptoms and management of snakebite.

A

Puncture marks, headache, double vision, faintness, sweating, tightness in chest/breathing difficulty. DRSABCD, apply bandage over the site of the bite and beyond, reassure the patient, do not elevate, immobilise affected area.

Q

Signs, symptoms and management of hypothermia.

A

Caused by exposure to very low temperatures. Shivering, weak pulse, slurred speech, slow response to follow instructions, shallow breathing. DRSABCD, get away from the elements, e.g. the cold, take off wet clothing and replace the wet clothing with blankets, reassure the person.

Q

Signs, symptoms and management of hyperthermia.

A

Caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures. It caused the body’s temperature control mechanism to not function correctly and thus internal body temperature rises dangerously high. Lack of sweat despite exertion, disorientation, possible unconsciousness, increase in core body temperature, hot skin, rapid pulse, constricted pupils, rapid breathing.

15
Q

Cuts and lacerations.

A

Close the wound, clean the wound, put pressure not the wound.

16
Q

Bleeding

A

Apply direct pressure.

17
Q

Fractures.

A

Direct or indirect.
Direct- receiving a blow e.g. falling log.
Indirect- bone is fractured but skin not broken.
Open- bone protruding from skin.
Complicated- injury to blood vessels due to fracture e.g. punctured lung.
DRSABCD, control bleeding, treat shock, immobilise, cover with blanket.

18
Q

Dislocations.

A

Ligaments are damaged, bone goes out of place.
Deformity, swelling, pain, tenderness.
DRSABCD, immobilise site, apply ice and elevate.

19
Q

Head injuries and concussion.

A

Damage to part of brain or skull.
Dizziness, blurred vision, confusion, bleeding from ears/nose, loss of memory, confusion.
DRSABCD, recovery position.

20
Q

Eye injuries.

A

May be caused due to dust, pollen, object or direct force. Redness, irritation, blurred vision.
DRSABCD, wash with water, do not rub, cover.

21
Q

Nasal injuries

A

Injuries causing nose billed and/or broken nose.
Bleeding from the nose, pain, swelling, bruising.
DRSABCD, breathe through nose, pinch nose, held tilted forward.

22
Q

Burn injuries.

A

In a lot of pain, external layers of skin, shock, swelling, red blisters.
DRSABCD, cool burnt area with cool water, minimise shock.

23
Q

Electrocution.

A

Electric current touches the body (the electric current will makes its course whichever is quickest to the ground). Casualty not conscious, shock, burns, tingling feeling.
DRSABCD, treat burns with cool water.

24
Q

Teeth injuries.

A

Teeth can be dislodged, knocked out or broken.
Pain, bleeding.
Straighten tooth. If dislodged, place back in socket. Rinse tooth in milk or saliva.

25
Q

Chest injuries.

A

E.g. Fractured ribs, occur to the lungs or heart.
Difficult breathing, pain, cramping, tender, lack of breath, blood from mouth.
DRSABCD, immobilise to prevent further damage.

26
Q

Abdominal injuries.

A

Injury to abdomen, from a force.
Internal bleeding or damaged organs.
Pain, blood in urine, shock, nausea.
DRSABCD, lay on back, no eating/drinking.

27
Q

A

Primary- DRSABCD

Secondary- examining the body
