World Health Organisation meaning of health.
A state of complete physical, mental and social well being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Health as a social construct.
Social construct is a concept that recognises that people have different views based on their social circumstances and ways of seeing, interpreting and interacting with their environment. A number of factors are likely to play a role in our social construct of health including: socioeconomic status, gender/age, level of education, geographic location, cultural background.
Dimensions of health.
Social- gives an individual communication skills and establishes interpersonal relationships.
Spiritual-gives an individual purpose, meaning and connectedness.
Mental-good mental health is characterised by the ability of individuals to function satisfactorily in their community and in the way they interact with others.
Emotional- resilience to cope with daily problems.
Physical- the systems of the body function well and there is absence of disease and other disorders of the body.
Determinants of health.
Socioeconomic factors- employment, education, income.
Sociocultural factors-family, peers, media,religion, culture.
Individual factors- knowledge and skills, attitudes, genetics, gender and age.
Environmental factors- geographical location, access to health services, technology.

Developing personal skills- enables people to exercise more control over their own health and environments and to make better health choices.
Creating supportive environments- gives support to individuals to improve their health.
Strengthening community action- setting priorities, making decisions and planning and implementing strategies to achieve better health.

Building healthy public policy- joint action contributes to ensuring safer and healthier goods and public services and cleaner, more enjoyable environments.
Definition of equity.
The fairness of allocating health resources to a diverse range of groups or individuals to improve their health outcomes.

Principle that recognises that some groups have special health needs.
