What is prejudice?
Negative preconceived notions we hold an individual to based on their membership in a particular group.
What is discrimination?
Treating others in an unfair matter due to the group in which they belong.
What is direct discrimination?
When a person or group are treated less favourable due to their background or characteristics.
What is in-direct discrimination?
When their is a policy for everyone, however it has an unfair effect on a particular group.
What are 3 forms of discrimination?
- Racism
- Sexism
- Agism
What is racism?
Treating someone less then and poorly due to their background and culture.
What is sexism?
Treating someone different specifically due to the fact of their gender.
What is agism?
Treating someone poorly or inadequate because of their age.
How do you reduce prejudice?

What does the “I” in ISSMEC stand for and mean?
Integroup conatct - Increasing contact between those who are discriminated against and those who discriminate.
What does the first “S” in ISSMEC stand for and mean?
Sustained contact - Prolonged and co-operative contact/activity.
What does the second “S” in ISSMEC stand for and mean?
Superordinate goals - Shared goals that can’t succeed without the help of others/everyone.
What does the “M” in ISSMEC stand for and mean?
Mutual interdpendance - Relying on one another to meet eachothers goal.
What does the “E” in ISSMEC stand for and mean?
Equality of status - Social interaction at the same level where no one group is higher is power or status.
What does the “C” in ISSMEC stand for and mean?
Changing social norms - Making sure that the descriminating group and the discriminated are both working to change the way they treat and act towards each other.
