How is a group formed?
They are formed when two or more people =
- Interact
- Influence eachother
- Share a common objective goal
What is status?
Refers to a person position in the hiearchy of a group.
What is social power?
Someone who has alot of influence over others has alot of social power.
Higher status = More social power.
What are the five types of social power?
- Reward
- Coercive
- Legitimate
- Referent
- Expert
What is “Reward” Power?
Ability to give positive concequences or remove negative concequences in responce to specific behaviour.
What is “Coercive” Power?
Ability to give negative concequences or remove positive concequences due to specific behaviour.
What is “Legitimate” Power?
An individuals status in a group, institution, or society in general gives them the right to excersize power over those of a lower status or authority.
What is “Referent” Power?
When an individual identifies with this person and wants to be like them or liked by them.
What is “Expert” Power?
This is when someone has specific skills or knowledge which are desirable or needed.
What are the two types of cultures?
- Collective
- Individualist
What is a collective culture?
A collective culture is when groups needs are valued more than individual needs.
What is a Individualist culture?
This is when individual needs in a specific culture are more important than group needs.
What is obedience?
When an individual changes their behaviour in responce to direct command.
What is conformity?
When individuals change their behaviour in responce to real or implied pressure from others.
5 Factors that affect conformity
- Normative
- Informational
- Unanimity
- Group Size
- Deindividuation
What is Normative influence?
When your liklihood to conform is influenced by the established behaviour of the group.
What is informational influence?
Looking at the behaviour of others to guide us in whether we should behave in a particular way.
What is Unanimity influence?
when we are more likely to conform when other members of the group behave in the same way.
What is Group Size influence?
Conformity will increase when the size of the group goes from 2-4. However when it reaches 8 it stays at the same level.
What is Deindividuation influence?
We may act differently in a larger group then if we were by ourselfs/alone.
