Define Prejudice
‘Pre-Judgement’, Unjustifiable and usually negative attitudes towards a group and it’s members – often based on insufficient/ incorrect information.
Define Discrimination
Unjustifiable and usually negative attitudes towards a group and its members – often based on insufficient/ incorrect information.
What is the difference between Direct & Indirect Discrimination
Direct = Treating someone unfavourably based on a prejudice.
Indirect = when there is a rule/ policy that applies for everyone, but disadvantages a certain group of people.
List all the causes of Prejudice
- Social Influence
- Inter-Group Competition
- Social categorisation
- Just-world phenomenon
Define Social Influence
- Attitudes learned from others that may change As, Bs, Cs (feelings, actions, thoughts).
Define Inter-Group Competition
- Struggle between groups who are both working towards an unshareable goal.
Define Social Categorisation
- Placing people into groups based off shared attributes creating an “Us” & “Them” mentality.
Define Just-World Phenomenon
- Believing that people get what they deserve and are not impacted by other factors out of their control.
How would we reduce Prejudice
In order to reduce prejudice, it is important to increase the interaction between conflicting groups (contact hypothesis).
What is Inter-Group Contact & what does it do
Increasing contact between groups in order to reduce prejudice.
What is Superordinate Goals
Superordinate goals are shared goals that are so big, that no individual or single group could achieve them on their own, cooperation & teamwork required.
What is Mutual Interdependence
Where people depend on another person or group to meet their shared goal.
What is Equal-Status Contact
A.K.A. Equity, it suggests that social interactions need to occur where there is no power difference, and communication and actions are performed at an equal level.
