What is the difference between discrimination and prejudice?
prejudice is unfairly judging a person before facts are known, holding biased opinion against an individual group
discrimination is to act against some on bias of sex, race, religion etc.
What are the Christian attitudes towards prejudice and discrimination?
John - “just as I have loved you, you also should love one another”
“there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, you are all one in Christ Jesus”
everyone is equal in the eyes of God
What did Archbishop Desmond Tutu do?
campaigned against racial injustice in South Africa
black people were placed in impoverished towns where working conditions were appalling
he organised peaceful demonstrations that led to the end of the apartheid and the release of Nelson Mandela
Examples of discrimination
gender:
- men hold a greater number of senior positions in the workplace
- women are paid less on average
- some churches do not allow women to be ministers
disability:
- disabled people don’t get the same work opportunities
- unborn babies who are disabled are often aborted
