Justice
Treat people fairly and justly according to the law
Everyone has equal rights- everyone is equal
If someone is found guilty, they are dealt with fairly
People work to change unfair laws
Tolerance
To show respect for the beliefs and practises of others
Respect other ways of life
Everyone can have and practise beliefs as long as they don’t harm others or aren’t illegal
Don’t have to agree with other people- just have to tolerate
Harmony
Live with peace around us
Religions believe in community
Treat people with kindness, compassion and generosity
We are responsible for one another and share values
Even if we are different, act justly and tolerate each other
Value of the Individual
We are all valuable, worthy and important and deserve fair and equal treatment
Faith- valuable because life is God given and we are unique and made in his image
Everyone equal regardless of race, gender, religion
Christianity and Prejudice
‘No Jew, no Greek, no slave, no free, for we are all one in the body of Christ’- Galatians 13
Love your neighbour
God created us equal
Jesus supported tax collectors, disabled, Romans
Women bishops- some churches allow it, some don’t
Judaism and Prejudice
Anti-semitism- hatred of Jews
All equal in God’s eyes
Jonah punished for prejudice against Ninevah
Deut.10:19- ‘And you are to love those who are aliens, for you yourselves were aliens in Egypt’
Islam and Prejudice
Men and women are equal, but have different roles
Muhammad was against slavery
Allah looks at the heart and deeds, not appearances
Islamic law allows non-Muslims to practise their religions
Sexism not the worst form of discrimination
Racism in media move
Sexism been mainly tackled- racism still appears lots
Racism leads to ethnic cleansing, genocide and religious prejudice
Discrimination is all equally dreadful and unfair
Sexism is the worst form of discrimination
Affects most people
Culturally and historically around for hundreds of years
Can’t change your gender
Worldwide issue
Class, Looks and Lifestyle
Thin models, if people are overweight they are seen as ugly
People now shift across class divides
Money is a big influence in lifestyle
Council homes make people assume they are poor and uneducated
Prejudice against class
Lifestyle choices eg poor diet, no exercise
Disability Discrimination
Due to mental/ physical handicap
Denial of public access or to work or to education
Law- people have now to put ramps of lifts in buildings
Mental disability- people don’t understand as they don’t see it
Denial of access often not purposeful, just impractical
Ageism
Is illegal
Based in stereotypes
Employers prefer young healthy people, though age often means experience
Old have ‘had their time’- women in the media
Youth= hooligans or yobs
Religious Prejudice
Discrimination to religion
More to do with race/colour than religion
Jews- Holocaust
Often, Muslims discriminated based on stereotypes of terrorists acting under Allah- though Islam doesn’t support violence
Examples of Institutional Racism
NHS- number of BMEs who have chief executive jobs (black and minority ethnics)
Football and the FA- very few BMEs and racist players
Police- ‘stop and search’- frequently target minorities
Institutional Racism
The collective failure of an organisation to provide an appropriate and professional service to people because of their colour, culture, or origin (ethnically)
Stephen Lawrence
22nd April 1993
Stephen stabbed and killed in racist attack
5 men arrested and charged- none convicted
Case mishandled due to racist attitudes of police
2005- law changed so people could go on trial twice
2011- 2 men convicted

What makes people prejudiced
Ignorance Media Peer pressure Fear Past experiences Background and family Friends and neighbours Been victims
Genocide
Mass killing of a group of people due to religion, race or other factors
Ethnic Cleansing
The forced removal of people from their homes due to race, religion or other issues
Scapegoating
Blaming certain groups for problems in society
Positive Discrimination
Treating people more favourably because they have been discriminated against in the past
Discrimination
Actions you take as result of prejudice
Stereotyping
Having an oversimplified mental image of people and applying it to everyone in a group
Prejudice
Thinking badly of someone because of the group they belong to
