Why are some people prejudice?

A

If someone does not know a group of people of understand their culture or background, it is easier to stereotype and reject them. Lacks of education can lead to the ignorance that breeds prejudice. This in turn leads to fear of others who are difference.

What can scapegoating be encouraged? Give an example

A

Fear and uncertainty about the future can encourage scapegoating, or blaming certain groups of people for problems in society. This can seem to justify treating them badly. E.G. The nazis persuaded people that the Jews were to blame for Germany’s economic problems to justify extreme discrimination against them

A

Racism is the belief that the colour of a persons skin determines their ability. Racists believe that role of some races are inferior to others. E.G black footballers even at the top of their league have faced racist chanting and spitting

Sexism is a form of gender discrimination. It means grating people favourably because of their gender. Stereotypes such as women should look after the home and family have helped to deny women equal opportunities in the workplace

A

Ageism is prejudice against someone because of their age leading to discrimination. It is often based on stereotypes. For example some poorly wrongly think that all young people are rude, irresponsible hooligans. However young people have better chances of being hired as they believe their health energy and productivity is better than that of someone older

Buddha left his wealthy lifestyle as he realised wealth did not bring happiness. He rejected the caste system as it only created divisions to feel superior to others. The Buddha taught that everyone has equal potential for reaching enlightenment. Right action, right speech, meeta requires Buddhists to treat people equally and show tolerance and consideration

Christians believe that all forms of discrimination are wrong as it goes against the idea of God’s design. God created men and women in his own image (genesis 1:26 imago dei) therefore all are of equal value

Hindu Dharma (teaching) is that Brahman is found in everything therefore any prejudice thoughts or discriminative actions would be viewed as wrong. Hinduism is a panentheistic religion

A

Ahimsa- non violence and love and respect for all things
Compassion is a key belief with the desire to improve things for others.
Hurting others can lead to bad karma which affects future reincarnations.
Hindus believe that the true self is the atman and as everyone has one everyone must be equal.
The Bhagavad Gita suggest that to reach liberation you should work the welfare of all fellow beings

A

Women cannot be priests in the Catholic Church or bishops in the angelican church
In thervada Buddhism women will pray for their reincarnation to be as a man
With the exception of ISKCON, in Hinduism all Brahmins are male
There are no female imams

How does prejudice and discrimination manifest itself in Hinduism

A

Traditionally Hindus were divided into four castes:
Brahmins (priests and teachers)
Kshatriyas (soldiers and rulers)
Vaishyas (merchants and farmers)
Shudras (labourers and farmers)
People could not easily marry someone of a different caste of mix freely. Below the shudras were the untouchables who has v few rights.

How did mahatma Gandhi fight against prejudice and discrimination

A

Gandhi practised non violence and believed in the presence of truth in each person’s soul. He believed the only way in treating others is to love them. He thought the best way to fight prejudice was peacefully, refusing to cooperate with authorities who discriminated against people. He used a started to campaign for the rights of Indians living in S Africa. He used method of non violent mass civil disobedience. Thousands of people refused to register for an unfair poll tax
