Prejudice Flashcards
Racial prejudice is shown towards Crooks who is referred to as the X. Derogatory, racial terms are used in reference to him.
‘negro stable buck’
He lives on his own, segregated from the other ranch workers because they don’t want him around because of the colour of his skin,
‘the negro stable buck, has his bunk in the harness room; a little shed that leaned off the wall of the barn.’
‘I could get you strung up on a tree so fast it ain’t even funny’
‘I ain’t wanted in the bunkhouse and you ain’t wanted in my room’
Sexism is shown towards Curley’s wife. Living on a ranch where the large majority of the inhabitants are male, she is very lonely.
I have never seen a piece of jail bait worse than her’
‘You know what I think? Well, I think Curley’s married…a tart’’
She is referred to as ‘X’ and never by an actual name. She is ‘labelled’ as property of a man.
Curley’s wife
Ableism is shown towards Lennie because he is disabled.
‘They’ll take ya to the booby hatch’
People with any sort of disability or who were seen as ‘not normal’ were not looked at sympathetically by society
