Hope Flashcards
Hope is a recurring theme throughout the novella, as it is shown through the repetition of George and Lennie’s dream, implying that hope is the only thing keeping them going in their mundane and difficult lives
“Ok. someday - we’re gonna get the jack together and we’re gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an’ a cow and some pigs and…” - George
But hope can also be a cruel thing, which breaks peoples spirits when it is unfulfilled. For example, Curley’s wife tells Lennie about how she always dreamt that she X. only to have that dream taken away from her. Y
“woulda been in the pichers,
“Coulda been in the movies, an’ had nice clothes - all them nice clothes like they wear.”
Lennie is a character that is constantly driven by hope. This hope takes the form of X, which is what Lennie hopes to do on the farm. This innocent hope makes it especially painful when George has to kill Lennie; he makes sure that his last thoughts are of the farm; Y
“tendin’ the rabbits,”
“[…] No, Lennie. Look down there acrost the river, like you can almost see the place.”
