Slim seems like quite a lonely figure in some ways. Despite his charisma, he is isolated in his leadership position. Slim admires George and Lennie’s companionship; X. He is slightly envious Y.

This shows the effect of lack of friendship on Crooks as he envies the friendships the other ranch workers have between one another.
Crooks: ‘They play cards in there. But I can’t because I’m black’.
Crooks acknowledges the rash behaviour of the people on the ranch is caused by their loneliness. He says that people are made for relationships and that without them, it makes you less human, less sure of the world around you.
“I tell ya a guy gets to lonely an’ he gets sick.”

The ranch workers acknowledge how lonely they are but think it is a part of life that they cannot avoid.
“Guys like us who work on ranches are loneliest guys in the world, they ain’t got no family, they don’t belong no place.”
Loneliness leads to bitterness and hostility.
