Q

Which factors helped prehistoric medicine improve?

A
  • War - limited impact - hunter gatherer societies improved abilities to repair basic damage to the skin using dressings from plant material.
  • Government - settled communities governed themselves together and organised individuals into roles to ensure the whole community was looked after. Included establishing/protecting roles of the careers within society which ensured knowledge was being passed on. Generally, women taking on these roles, ensured girls could be taught over a lifetime.

Q

What factors hindered medical improvement in the prehistoric period?

A
  • Science and Technology - Inability to write/produce records of their procedures/remedies meant little refinement or improvement to treatment occurred. Knowledge passed by word of mouth which could lead to errors as ingredients could be mixed in different quantities and become ineffective.
  • Attitudes - based on religion so limited how much they could improve their medical understandings as they wouldn’t look into scientific explanations as it went against their religion.
