What nutrients are important for a pregnant women?
All
Particularly protein as it helps to develop the body cells of the foetus
What is carbohydrates need for?
They are need especially in the last 3 months, which is a rapid growth period for the baby
What is fibre and water needed for?
Because constipation can be an issue for pregnant women
What is iron and vitamin C needed for?
They are essential because the baby stores the iron for the the first four months of their life
Why should women make sure they are having enough folic acid?
Because it reduces the risk of the baby having spina bifida
Name as many things as possible that pregnant women should avoid and why
Alcohol - it leads to poor nutrient absorption
Smoking -it can lead to low birth weight
Raw eggs - they could contain salmonella
Liver - contains high levels of vitamin A (toxic to baby)
Soft cheese - they could contain listeria (bad bacteria)
Why is calcium so important
Because the baby gets the best of everything and so calcium is taken from the mothers bones and given to the baby. This means that if she doesn’t have enough calcium, her bones will be very weak
