How long is the second trimester?
Second trimester is from the 14th - 27th week of pregnancy.
How long is trimester three?
Trimester three is between the 28th week and the 40th week of pregnancy.
When does fertilization happen?
Fertilization happens within the first 2 weeks of trimester 1.

What tests are done to screen for birth defects?
Ultrasound- it is useful to monitor fetal growth.
Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) and Amniocentis- used to identify chromosomal errors and many genetic disorders prior to birth.
CVS- cells are extracted from the placenta.
Amniocentis- a needle is used to extract amniotic fluid containing fetal cells. Usually done between 14 and 16 weeks.
What are teratogens?
How do teratogens affect prenatal development?
Teratogens are substances that cause damage to an embryo or fetus.
Deviations can result from exposure to teratogens. Ex) certain parts of the body may not form correctly.
What are some examples of teratogens?
Maternal disease, cancer, tuberculosis, drugs, inhalants, streptomycin.
What are some effects and consequences of prematurely born children?
Premature babies
What is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome?
Mothers who are heavy drinkers or alcoholics are at significant risk of delivering infants with FAS. Children are generally smaller, with smaller brains. They frequently have heart defects and hearing losses, and their faces are distinctive, with a somewhat flattened nose and often an unusually long space between nose and mouth. The child’s eyes also might be father apart than normal. They will suffer from learning and behavior difficulties.
How long is the first trimester?
First 2-13 weeks of pregnancy.
