fasting glucose: 100-125 mg/dl
Hgb-A1c: 5.7-6.4% (borderline)
2 hr post prandial glucose: 140-199 mg/dl
what is “pancreatic burnout”
decreased insulin production late in the course of type II diabetes.
what are some risk factors for prediabetes
obesity, family history, diet, sedentary, race, women who have large babies (9lbs >) and a previous diagnosis of gestational diabetes.
what are the sx of prediabetes?
they are usually asymptomatic
(postulated that you may have early sensory nerve toxicity)
DDX of prediabetes
non fasting glucose
Cushing syndrome
well controlled type 1 or type 2
hyperthyroidism
what are some medications that could cause prediabetes
corticosteroids, antibiotics, beta blockers, psychiatric medications, diuretics (thiazide type e.g. HCTZ or Chlorthalidone)
TX for prediabetes
weight loss
Metformin
exercise
