Precipitation Flashcards
What are some issues with precipitation for ATS?
Visbility Reduction
Low Clouds
Downdraughts
Freezing Rain
Snow or Ice
Snow or Ice Clearing
Contamination of the runways and taxiways
Reduced braking action
Temporarily close a runway or airport
What are the present weather phenomena?
Precipitation
Obscuration

What are the different types of precipitation?
Drizzle (DZ)
Rain (RA)
Snow (SN)
Snow Grains (SG)
Ice Pellets (PL)
Ice Crystals (IC)
Hail (GR)
Small Hail (GS)
What is Drizzle?
DZ
Slowly falling water droplets less than 0.5mm in diameter. Their individual impact on water is imperceptible.
What is Rain?
RA
Water droplets with a diameter of 0.5mm or more. Continuous rain falls from clouds formed by slant-wise ascent and heavy showers of shorter duration are produced by deep convective clouds.
What is Snow?
SN
White or translucent ice-crystals in a complex branch hexagonal form. Snow will reach the surface if the temp is near or below zero.
What are Snow Grains?
SG
Frozen precipitation in the form of very small, white and opaque grains of rice. Solid equivalent of drizzle.
What are Ice Pellets?
PL
Precipitation in the form of transparent/translucent pellets of ice.
What are Ice Crystals?
IC
Precipitation in the form of very tiny, singular or unbranched ice needles, columns or plates.
What is Hail?
GR
Small balls or pieces of ice with a diameter of 5mm or more.
What is Small Hail?
GS
Hailstones with a diameter of less than 5mm.
What is the size of a water-droplet in a cloud?
0.02mm
What is the size of Drizzle?
Drops less than 0.5mm. Usually around 0.2mm
What is the size of Heavy Rain?
Max 5.5mm in Diameter.
What is precipitation?
Any moisture that is released from the atmosphere in either liquid or solid form.
