Altimetry Flashcards
What is Altimetry?
The study of pressure variation within the atmosphere.
What factors affect atmospheric density?
Pressure
Humidity
Temperature
How does pressure affect atmospheric density?
The greater the pressure, the greater the density.
How does humidity affect atmospheric density?
The greater the humidity, the lower the density. This is because water vapour is less dense than dry air.
How does temperature affect atmospheric density?
The greater the temperature, the lower the density. This is because atoms take up more space as temperature is increased.
What are the units of pressure?
Hecto-Pascal hPa
Inches of Mercury in Hg
What is the ISA value for pressure?
1013.25 hPa
29.92 in Hg
What is ISA?
Internation standard atmosphere. A set of average values which are utilised for the calibration of aircraft altimeters.
What are altimeters?
The cockpit instrument that indicates height by sampling the static (undisturbed air) pressure.
What weighs more an identical column of warm air or cold air?
A column of cold air will weigh more than an identical column of warm air.
If they weigh the same, what is taller, a column of warm air or cold air?
A column of warm air will be taller than a column of cold air, if they weigh the same.
What is the basis of the cockpit altimeter?
Aneroid barometer
How is the pressure datum for the cockpit altimeter altered?
Through the sub-scale.
Describe your height if you are using QNH
Altitude above mean sea level
Describe your height if you are using QFE
Height above aerodrome level, or other datum
