Precaution Procedure Flashcards
1
Q
What is medical asepsis?
A
- Destruction of pathogenic microorganisms after they leave the body
- Environmental hygiene measures like equipment cleaning and disinfection
2
Q
What are the types of medical asepsis?
A
- Handwashing: Most important means of preventing infection (antimicrobial soap required)
- Barrier Protection: PPE like gloves, masks, goggles, face shields, respirator
- Isolation Precautions
- Transmission-Based Precautions
- Disinfection: Chemical use to destroy pathogens
3
Q
What’re standard precautions?
A
- All patients are presumed to be infective for blood-borne pathogens
4
Q
When are standard precautions used?
A
- There is a possibility of blood, body fluids, nonintact skin, mucous membranes and sources of infections
5
Q
What’re transmission based precautions?
A
- Used when the patient is known or suspected of being infected with contagious disease
- Used in addition to standard precaution
- Includes contact, airborne and droplet precautions
6
Q
What’re contact precautions?
A
- Used to reduce risk of transmission of microorganisms by direct or indirect contact
- Indirect involves contact with intermediate
7
Q
What’re airborne precautions?
A
- Reduce airborne infectious agent transmission
- Infection by inhale or deposition on host
- Special air handling and ventilation are required
8
Q
What’re droplet precautions?
A
- Reduce risk of droplet transmission of infectious agents
- Transmission from contact with conjunctivae or mucous membranes of nose & mouth
9
Q
How do you dry your hands after washing in a hospital setting?
A
Use a clean disposable towel (Paper towel)
10
Q
What do you remove first when leaving an isolation room?
A
Gloves
