Where should you puncture?
- Distal segment of the 3rd or 4th finger of the nondominant hand
How is the puncture made?
Fleshly portion of the finger, to the side or center. Perpendicular to the lines of the fingerprint
What is the first step after introducing yourself and identifying the patient and assembling the equipment?
Warm the site for a minimum of 3 minutes with a warm moistened towel or a warming device
Why do you warm the site?
- Increase the blood flow up to 7 times.
What is the name of the specimen collected?
- Arterialized Specimen b/c of arterial flow to the area
What procedure is warming essential?
Collecting specimens for pH or blood gases
What do you clean the site with?
- 70% isopropyl alcohol and allow to dry
Why do you have to let the alcohol dry?
Alcohol residue can cause hemolysis of RBC’s and interfere with glucose testing
Why is Povidone-iodine (Betadine) not used to clean the site?
Interferes with several tests like bilirubin, uric acid, phosphorous, and potassium
What is the draw order for dermal capillary specimens?
- Lavender
- Green
- Red
