Pre-requisite Review Flashcards
Reproduction
The making of a new individual (sexually or asexually).
Sex
Rearrangement of genetic material
What is cancer?
Cancer is unregulated cell growth and cellular reproduction. It might be caused by mutations in the G1 and G2 checkpoints, or by faulty signaling.
Mitosis vs. Meiosis
Meiosis has synapsis (the pairing up of homologous chromosomes), crossing over (the exchange of equivalent pieces of one homologue with another), and reductive division (the reduction in number of chromosomes from the diploid number to the haploid number). Mitosis does not have these three features. All of the differences happen in Meiosis I; Meiosis II is very much like Mitosis. Other differences don’t really work. Neither process makes cells; they make nuclei. Both processes can make gametes.
