Neonate: birth to 1 month Infant: 1 month to years Young child: 2 years to 6 years Child: 6 to 12 years Adolescent: 12 to 18 years
Paediatric Life Support
15:2 ratio (100-120 per minute)
Danger, response, shout, airways, breathing, circulation
Attempt 5 rescue attempts (enough for chest to raise over 1 - 1.5 seconds)
Look for SoL: no SoL / RR < 60 = assume cardiac arrest
Infant: two thumbs or two fingers, child: one or two hands
If alone perform 1 minute of CPR before going for help
POPS score (paediatric observation and priority score)
Designed for use in emergency and urgent care settings.
Good for discharging patients confidently and identifying sick patients.
Key points
Risk stratification is important
Irritability is an important sign
Drowsiness is common: this is reassuring in an up and down pattern.
Children under 4 weeks may become hypothermic if they have sepsis
Antipyretics reduce fever due to their pharmacological actions. You should not assume that this means that the cause of the fever is less serious.
Growth Charts
Use WHO 0-4 growth chart / neonate and infant close monitoring chart
Always use a gender appropriate chart
Plot birth data for infants born 37-42 weeks at 40 weeks
For preterm babies draw a line back the number of weeks and mark with an arrow
