pre op/intra op notes Flashcards
anaesthetic
drugs that depress the CNS and PNS. Depression of consciousness, sensory stimulation. Interferes with nerve conduction
general anaesthesia
drug that induces altered CNS state, varies degree of pain stimuli, consciousness, skeletal muscle relaxation
Overton Myer theory
the more lipid soluble the drug is the higher potency it has
Minimum alveolar concentration (MAC)
measures potency of volatile anaesthetics. Minimum amount of alveolar air concentration that is required to prevent movement in 50 percent of patients. is used to compare potency of anaesthetics.
local anaesthetics
block nerve conduction to a specific area. spinal and epidural
Spinal
local anaesthetic that temporarily paralyses skeletal and smooth muscle. no loss of conciousness.
Risk: spinal headache, resp depression, infection
Benefits: safer for pts with cardiac and resp co-morbidites. flexible-prolonged pain relief. Pt is conscious.
Intrathecal
local anaesthetic for lower body, shorter surgeries. Pt conscious. Safer for patients with cardiac and resp comorbidities.
