What’s ASA status?
A
A system for assessing the fitness of cases before surgery. Five categories (sixth added later):
- Healthy patient
- Mild systemic disease-no fictional limitations
- Severe systemic disease-definite functional limitation
- Severe systemic disease that’s a constant threat to life
- Moribund patient not expected to survive 24 hours with or without surgery

What are the aims of management?
A
To diagnose the presence of pre-existing disease and make an accurate assessment of the degree of the problem. To ensure the patients medical condition is optimised before surgery. To consider the potential for drug interactions.
