Two class systems → upper and lower classes, decided from birth
Gender
Women seen as the ‘weaker’ sex
Lower participation from women
Sports that were not aggressive, that didn’t require strength
What are the types of activities both classes of women would participate in?
Lower class → smock-races
Upper class → archery
Law and order
Basically no law as there was no police force
Sport tended to be violent and cruel
Nothing was illegal like gambling / animal cruelty
Education and literacy
Only upper class educated and literate Working class played simple games with limited rules e.g. Mob football Upper class played more complex games eg. Real tennis
Availability of time
Lower class had long working hours and tended to work everyday → only play on holidays Upper class nad lots of free time for sports
Availability of money
Lower class lived off the land → natural equipment Upper class had disposable income → could afford equipment and facilities
Transport
Upper class → horse and cart
Lower class → walk, so played locally
