A

A plan presented by David Wilmot made to stop the spread of slavery into the territories won from Mexico. Plan passed the house but failed the senate. *showed power of the north *made south suspicious

What is Uncle Tom’s Cabin? Why is it so impactful?

A

It’s a novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe that details the cruelty of slavery. *published as non-fiction but was fiction. *south banned it, but that only fueled the fire. *changed other people’s and countries’ views on slavery.

Details of the Kansas- Nebraska Act

A

Stephen Douglas sponsored the bill that allowed PS to solve the conflict between slave states and non-slave states. Divides land into Kansas and Nebraska. Led to violence in the Senate. (Charles Sumner called out the Democrats’ bs and got whacked by Preston Brooke)
*both northern and southern ppl rushed out to KANEB bc PS decided on slave or non-slave. It led to “Bleeding Kansas,” where massacres were happening between pro-slavery and anti-slavery.

Details and Outcome of Dred Scott Case.

A

Fred Scott was a slave who lived with owner in free territory. Scott had an abolitionist attorney file a suit for his freedom but his case lost. The court ruled that he was not a citizen therefore he could not sue. Later his owners son bought him and his family to set them free. Scott Died 9 months later.

What happens at Harpers Ferry? Who are the key players?

A

John Brown was released from prison after killing slave owners and did it again. This time, he planned to raid an arsenal and start a slave revolt. He led 5 blacks and 15 whites. His “soldiers” ran once confronted, leaving him arrested again and most men dead.
